| General |
| In the middle of the Aegean Sea, opposite enchanting Mt. Pelion, lies idyllic, tree-converted Skiathos, the most touristically developed island of the Northern Sporades group. Skiathos has always played an important role in the history of the Aegean. Its striking natural beauty, safe harbour protected by four islets, fertile soil and marine wealth made it an attractive place of settlement for tribes in prehistoric times and for regional powers such as the Romans, Venetians and Turks during the last two millennia. The main town of the island has stood on the same site since prehistoric times, with the exception of the period between 1350 and 1829, when the inhabitants moved to the medieval fortress (Kastro) about 8km, to the northeast to escape raids by pirates and Turks. |
| SKIATHOS TODAY |
| The island today combines a cosmopolitan atmosphere with picturesque surroundings and old-world tranquility. Rocky shores, golden sandy beaches, pine and walnut trees, breathtaking sunsets as well as an important biotope for migratory birds. Skiathos is all this.
The islands popularity continues to grow. A modern tourist infrastructure offers a wide range of accommodation and amenities for unforgettable holidays. Delicious food, exciting nightlife and frequent cultural events are just some of the island's many attractions that draw visitors back year after year. |
