Waterfall on Rodopi mountain range
The Cave of Aggitis River
Ski Centre on Mt. Falakron
Mountain paths on Rodopi
Nature has gifted the countryside of the Prefecture of Drama with unique habitats of great biological, ecological and aesthetic value. Rich in natural beauty, it constitutes an ideal destination for nature lovers, for the lovers of adventure and for everyone who wishes to escape from the city and come closer to nature. The creation of proper infrastructure including traditional accommodation and dining facilities on mountainous and forest stretches has promoted the area to a heaven for alternative tourism. One of the best in the Balkans, the ski centre on imposing Mt. Falakron, offers comfortable accommodation, restaurant and a ski school, while four mountain shelters provide accommodation for climbing aficionados. At the feet of Mt. Falakron near the town of Prosotsani, the cave of Aggiti River (Maara Cave), unique in beauty and the only aquatic cave in Greece, features stalactites of various shapes and sizes that ornament its interior. The forests of Elatia, the best preserved among the forests in Europe, offer refuge to a large number of rare specimen of the European fauna and flora. The moist, silent and dark forests of the region provide shelter to the bear, the wolf, the wild goat, the golden eagle, the horn-owl and the owl, forming a splendid mosaic of wide variety. Directly linked to the history and culture of the region, various local events, such as the festivities on Epiphany Day, popular traditional celebrations, the international short-film festival, art shows with the participation of artists from the Balkans, the public library, as well as the aggressive network of local associations determine the cultural identify of the region.

From Athens or Thessaloniki, Drama can be reached by either bus or train. Air travel is facilitated through the airport of Kavala.
