Skiathos boasts many enchanting beaches. The best known is the golden sandy beach of Koukounaries, which is part of the unique wetlands that are being protected and developed for ecotourism with joint funding from Skiathos Municipality and the European Union (Envireg). Other beaches are those of Vassilias, Megali Ammos, Achladias, Tzanerias, Kanapitsa, Troulos, Agia Parakevi and Vromolimnos. West of Koukounaries are the beaches of Banana, small Krassa, Aselinos, Agia Eleni (for nudists) and to the north, the fabulous Mandraki. Boats take bathers to the Blue Grotto and the Dark Grotto, to Lalaria, a unique beach with round white pebbles, where one can see the fantastic rock formations known as Trypia Petra, the beach of Kastro and to the small islands (Tsougria, Arko, etc.) opposite the harbour.
